LUMSoc Freshers’ Day!
On October 5th 2024, LUMSoc proudly hosted Freshers Day, an event filled with games, food, and valuable information for freshers who had just arrived in Leeds. A total of 90 students, mostly freshers, participated in the event, which ran from 10 am to 3 pm.
The event began with an introduction to LUMSoc, a Malaysian society at the University of Leeds, which supports the welfare of its members and celebrates Malaysian culture in Leeds, followed by introductions of each committee member. Then, we played three ice-breaking games: Pisang Goreng, Business Promotion, and Telur ke Naga. The games were designed to spark conversation among attendees and provide an opportunity for them to make new friends. After the games, everyone gathered at tables outside the Leeds University Union to enjoy food specially prepared by the LUMSoc Committee, including Nasi Goreng, Ayam Popcorn, and Teh Tarik. We even had our partner, Fantuan Delivery, there giving away free Boba milk tea to students!
Being away from home can feel like a stab in the heart, but there’s no need to be afraid. Wherever you are, you’ll always find people with shared interests and traits, and soon enough, you’ll build a sense of belonging. Go with the flow, or even create one yourself; it’s up to you!
Seeing the positive faces after the event, LUMSoc was thrilled to have taken the first step in creating a “home away from home” for Malaysian students in Leeds.
LUMSoc’s First CarBoot Sale!
Once upon a time in Leeds, there was a common tale of a senior burdened by the excess of belongings from years of student life, wondering how to pass them on without simply giving them away. Across the city, a junior was setting up a new space, realizing just how many essentials he’d need—from rice cookers to winter jackets. Both could have been frustrated, but LUMSoc brought them together to make a solution possible!
On October 19th 2024, LUMSoc hosted a Car Boot Sale, giving members a platform to buy and sell their preloved items. The event saw a strong turnout, with attendees visiting stalls from 2 pm to 6 pm. A variety of items were sold, including electrical appliances (irons, rice cookers, even a VR headset!), all kinds of clothing (long jackets, windbreakers, pants, t-shirts), and other miscellaneous items like a bicycle—yes, a bicycle! There were even unique finds such as crocheted items— for the creatives out there!
The Car Boot Sale helped these sellers find new homes for items that could still be used for a long time, while new students found affordable items to meet their needs.
A win-win situation for everyone, don’t you think?
LUMSoc’s GIAG: Jom Lah Mamak!
October also brought a wave of nostalgia and warmth as LUMSoc hosted the delightful “Jom Lah Mamak”, a night that captured the heart and soul of Malaysian culture right here in Leeds! On October 26th, the Common Ground in LUU was buzzed with excitement as attendees gathered to experience a heartwarming slice of Malaysian culture. The evening was a true feast for the senses, with diverse mouth-watering dishes that included everything from sizzling Maggie Goreng to crispy Roti Canai and our iconic Teh Tarik, with each bite taking us back to the streets of Malaysia.
To spice things up, we introduced a friendly Bola Kertas League, which had everyone on their feet, cheering and laughing together, proving that no mamak night is complete without a little fun. The competition was fierce, and we were blown away by the skills and creativity on display. Who knew the Bola Kertas League could be such a crowd favorite? Our photo booth was a fantastic addition, capturing spontaneous smiles and memorable moments throughout the night, allowing everyone to take home a piece of the experience. As if that wasn’t enough, the atmosphere was electric with live music that resonated through the venue, creating a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening.
The event truly fostered a sense of togetherness, as old friends reunited, and new friendships blossomed amidst the warm glow of shared laughter and stories. The night also became a beautiful reminder of our shared heritage and the strength of our community. And it was a small slice of Malaysia, bringing comfort, laughter and a taste of home to all of us!
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, making this night one for the books!
