Deepavali Dinner: A Night of Lights and Delights

LUMSoc x MASSoc Deepavali Celebration

On 3rd November, the month started with a dazzling celebration of the Festival of Lights through the Deepavali Dinner, hosted in collaboration by LUMSoc and MASSoc at Aagrah Leeds. The evening featured an all-you-can-eat buffet of Indian Cuisine, giving attendees the chance to indulge in a variety of delicious dishes while celebrating the Festival of Lights.

The celebration extended beyond the plate; it was a vibrant cultural experience! Guests came together for kolam coloring, showcasing their creativity and embracing Indian traditions. Lively conversations about Indian culture brought everyone closer, making the evening even more memorable. It was an evening that truly embodies the spirit of Deepavali- bringing people together in light, joy and unity. Thank you to all who joined us in making this night so special.

Nadia’s Baking Social: A Sweet Social Success

Nadia and her sweet treats 😉

November also became a sweet social success for us as, on a crisp November afternoon, November 10th, Tribeka City Centre became the hub of creativity and fun as Nadia’s Baking Social was held. This delightful gathering brough LUMSoc members togther to mix, whisk, and bake their way to delicious treats and deeper connections. Aprons on and spatulas in hand, members threw themselves into crafting banana bread and peach cobbler, turning simple ingredients into mouth-watering masterpieces.

As the treats baked to perfection, the waiting game turned into an impromptu karaoke session, proving that waiting can be just as exciting as the main event. Once the desserts were ready, everyone gathered in the outdoor lounge, enjoying their homemade treats under the stunning Leeds skyline. A sprinkle of fun, a dash of teamwork, and a generous helping joy made this baking social truly unforgettable

Crafted by Culture: Art that Speaks of Home

Here’s to more relaxing activities with LUMSoc!

Who says Art is just for Museums? LUMSoc’s Arts and Craft Event on November 16th transformed Leeds University Union into a vibrant canvas, bringing a splash of color and creativity. Designed as a stressbuster from academic routines, this event invited attendees to unleash their inner Picasso with a Malaysian twist. The lineup of activities included Chinese Paper Cutting, Batik Painting, Rangoli Paper Quilling, and Batu Seremban Making- each offering a glimpse into the artistic diversity of Malaysian Culture.

Far from being just a crafting session, every brushstroke and fold carried stories of Malaysian’s rich cultural tapestry. The event also fostered connection, cultural exchange, and a deeper appreciation for traditions. Adding a modern flair, the LUMSoc merchandise design competition challenged participants to infuse their creations with innovation. By the end of the day, attendees didn’t just leave with their creations, but also with a renewed sense of unity and a celebration of the cultural richness that ties society together.

Tugging at Tradition: Hyde Park Goes Malaysian

A brisk November 17th didn’t stop LUMSoc’s Parents from hosting an unforgettable Hari Keluarga at Hyde Park. Members of the LUMSoc community came together for a day packed with nostalgic Malaysian childhood games, rekindling cherished memories.

Teams were formed with their respective parents, setting the stage for some lively competition. The games, including Sambut Belon Guna Kain Batik, Baling Selipar, Isi air dalam botol guna sponge (sponge relay), and the ever-popular Tarik Tali (Tug of War), brought out everyone’s competitive spirit. The park echoed with cheers as teams supported their members with unwavering enthusiasm. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Tarik Tali, where the loudest cheers and stronger displays of pride lit up the chilly afternoon.

Adding to the warmth was a potluck feast featuring beloved dishes from home, a comforting reminder of shared cultural roots. Despite the brisk weather, the event was a perfect bland of laughter, camaraderie, and friendly rivalry. With each team’s pride and spirit shining through, Hari Keluarga proved that a little nostalgia, good food, and a lot of joy can make even the coldest day feel like home.
