It was SUMMERTIME!

The season when everyone took vacations, returned to their homeland, or simply enjoyed some fun activities. The weather was perfect, and best of all, no classes to attend!

During the summer of 2024, 7 out of 8 newly appointed LUMSoc committee members flew back to Malaysia, joining dozens of other Malaysians. Throughout the three-month break, LUMSoc organized several events for University of Leeds students, both current and incoming, as well as for the wider community.

The first event was a volunteering program, hosted in collaboration with a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Feeding the Needy. The program, known as the Feeding the Needy Care Project, has been running since 2017. It has successfully supported many homeless individuals and families in the B40 income group by providing food, basic education for children, and health checkups.

On 25th July 2024, a total of 23 volunteers, including the LUMSoc committee members, participated in the event. They gained valuable first-hand experience in helping the underprivileged by packaging and distributing food as well as teaching the children.

LUMSoc was fortunate to secure a collaboration with such a compassionate charity team, and the feedback following the event was overwhelmingly positive. With a sense of fulfillment lingering in the air, our volunteers left with hearts full and minds opened to a wider horizon after an inspiring day of empathy. Quite the experience, wasn’t it?

As the new term approached, on 24 August 2024 at Upperdeck KL, LUMSoc, in collaboration with the Sheffield University Malaysian Association, hosted a pre-departure lunch for incoming students of both the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield. The casual lunch aimed to provide a relaxed setting for participants to mingle with Malaysian committee members from both universities and discuss the new chapter they were about to begin in England. It also served to ease any feelings of worry or anxiety the students might have about the transition.

We understand that adapting to university life isn’t easy, especially in a completely new environment far from home. But don't worry, LUMSoc will always be there, offering you a home away from home.
